 After a strong third-place showing in the prestigious 47th annual Fraulein Volleyfest this past weekend in New Braunfels, the state ranked Georgetown Lady Eagles will take a break from competition Tuesday before tackling the Leander ISD Volleypalooza this coming Thursday through Saturday.

 Coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles did have their 18-match season-opening winning streak snapped in the gold bracket semifinals Saturday by El Paso Franklin, 2-1 (25-27, 25-19, 25-20), but rebounded to sweep San Antonio Johnson, 2-0 (25-17, 25-17) to claim the No. 3 finish in the 32-team event.

 "What an outstanding tournament the girls had this weekend," Richardson said. "We were 8-1 for the tournament -- only dropping three-sets on the last day. It was night and day from our appearance here last year.

 "The team executed our game plan well and stayed composed the whole entire tournament. We only lost to a 6A school, so we believe our season will be great."

 Georgetown had reached the semifinals earlier Saturday by beating tournament co-host New Braunfels Canyon, 2-1 (25-16, 17-25, 25-13).

 Two Lady Eagles made the all-tournament team -- 6-foot-5 Addy Gaido, who amassed 105 kills in nine tournament outings, and senior libero Raegan Ramirez, who made a total of 139 digs in statistics reported by Max Preps. She had 27 in the Canyon match.

 "Addy and Raegan made the all-tourney team, but everyone on our team played lights out."

 To reach the gold bracket Georgetown posted six 2-0 victories in pool action on Thursday and Friday. They opened with wins over Gregory-Portland, Arlington and co-host New Braunfels and then completed the run on Friday by topping San Antonio Antonian, La Vernia and San Antonio Reagan.

 Dripping Spring's the state's No. 1-ranked 6A team with a 22-0 record won the Fraulein Volleyfest championship with a 2-0 win over El Paso Franklin. NB Canyon claimed the consolation crown.

 As a team, Georgetown, which now stands 19-1 for the young season, has won 41 of its 45 sets this season. The Lady Eagles had hitting percentages of more than .300 in six of their nine matches in New Braunfels, including a .391 reading against Arlington.

 The only early week action by a GHS volleyball team this week will see the Freshman A coach Jason Allgood will lead his team against its Belton counterpart at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the Tigers' court.

 After the Volleypalooza, Georgetown will play non-district matches at home with Liberty Hill on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and at Austin Westlake on Friday, Sept. 6. District 23-5A competition will begin on Friday, Sept. 11. Liberty Hill was ranked first in 5A in this past week's Texas Girls Coaches Association state poll.
