 Quite frankly it wasn't the outcome the Georgetown Lady Eagles and a majority of their followers desired Friday night in the Region III-5A area-round playoff matchup with Montgomery -- especially after GHS jumped to a 2-0 lead in the match at Hearne High School.

 But the third-place Lady Bears from District 21-5A rebounded from losing the initial two sets -- 25-13, 25-22 -- by winning the next three 25-22, 25-17, 18-16, advancing a to regional quarterfinal match with Brenham this coming Tuesday night in Waller.

  After the loss that ended Georgetown's season with a 33-16 mark, Lady Eagles coach Jenny Richardson said, "We made too many errors at the wrong time with our backs against the wall. It did not help that Addy and Raegan were not 100% healthy."

  On Saturday, she elaborated on her feelings about the loss and her team which shared the 23-5A championship with Pflugerville Hendrickson at 13-1 and then won a playoff with the Lady Hawks for the top playoff seeding: "I am still in shock. I wish I could put into words what happened and why we lost, but I can't find the words. So, I would like to focus on the great season we had.

 "Our season was a rollercoaster -- full of ups and downs. This group was very fun to coach. They are funny, hardworking and keen on learning about volleyball. I am very sad that it is over. Our four-seniors -- Kamryn (Shelton), Megan (Hall), MaKenna (Heine), and Reagan (Truitt) have done a great job leading this team. We wish them nothing but the best, and are thankful for the positive impact they have had on the program."

 One of the Lady Eagles' biggest woes Friday night was trying to neutralize the accurate laser attacks by 5-foot-10 freshman Delaney Wright, who led both teams with 27 kills in 51 hits. Her Friday total raised here season total to 543 kills.

 The decisive fifth-set race to 15 points was extended when a kill by Montgomery's Savannah Welch deadlocked things at 15-15, Georgetown went up 16-15 on a kill by junior middle Sophia Jazesf. However, Montgomery extended its season with three consecutive points. The set was tied nine times with neither team leading by more than two points.

 The Lady Eagles dominated the opening set, taking the lead at 2-1 on a net serve by the Lady Bears and pushed the margin to as many as 12 points on four occasions. The set point came on a kill by junior Molly O'Shaughnessy.

 The second set nip-and-tuck. With the score tied 19-19, GHS scored four straight points and Montgomery countered with four to make it 23-23. A kill by Georgetown junior Sadie Mccauley gave the Lady Eagles and edge before junior Allison O'Shaughnessy flipped the deciding point over the net. A highlight of the set was a seven-point run by GHS, which featured a six-point service series by junior Issabella Casanova that gave the Lady Eagles a 16-10 lead before the Montgomery attack closed the gap.

 In the third set, Georgetown fell behind 9-2 early, but a rally ignited by three kills by Jazesf helped the Lady Eagles tie the set at 12-12. However, the Wright-led attack put the Lady Bears in a 23-21 lead. A kill by Mccauley cut the lead 23-21, but two errors produced the Montgomery win, cutting the GHS lead to 2-1.

 In some ways the fourth set was a mirror image of the third. Montgomery took a 10-2 lead, but an eight-point run highlighted by a seven-point service series by Kenna Heine tied the set at 10-10. But the Lady Bears scored seven of the next eight points to go up 17-11 and Georgetown could come no closer than four points at 21-17 on a kill by M. O'Shaughnessy.

 Statistically, GHS had 59 kills on 183 hits with 16 errors. They were led by Sadie Mccauley with 15 kills (46 attacks), M. O'Shaughnessy with 13 kills (47 hits) and Jazesf with 10 kills (24 hits). Standout junior Addy Gaido, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter, played sparingly with seven kills in 13 attempts. Gaido, who is committed to the Texas Longhorns, left the gym with her left foot in a mini-boot. Junior Mckenzie Bernard also had seven kills.

 Prior to Friday's match, Richardson said that she planned to rest Gaido unless she was needed.

 Other statistical leaders for GHS were Heine with three aces, the 6-foot-1 Bernard with six total blocks, junior Raegan Ramirez had 34 digs, giving her the school record for digs in a season, and A. O'Shaughnessy had 23 assists.

 Montgomery had 58 kills in 185 attempts with 26 errors.

 In addition to her hitting ability, Wright had 36 on her team's 104 digs.

 In the second game of Friday's doubleheader in Hearne, Hendrickson blanked Montgomery Lake Creek, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21). The Lady Hawks will play 21-5A champion College Station in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Giddings.
