Brenham Recap

11-14-22

By GALEN WELLNICKI

Georgetown volleyball coach Jenny Richardson's comments were both candid on the Lady Eagles' 3-0 loss to Brenham in Region III-5A quarterfinal action in Hearne on Tuesday but displayed her very positive feelings about her team.

"I wish we would have played better, but this loss surely does not define this season." Richardson said. "I would repeat this whole season over again even knowing the outcome. I have had the best time with this team. They have grown so much as players and young women. Their parents have been awesome as well -- fun-- supportive -- and all fired up about supporting the volleyball program.

These players will leave a legacy that just keeps reiterating that GTVB is here to stay. I am proud of who they are, how they carry themselves and everything that they stand for. I wish we would have played better, but I am proud of the season, and all the accomplishments this team delivered."

The Lady Eagles finished the campaign with a 28-19 record that included a demanding early season run and a 12-2 runner-up record in District 23-5A. They had advanced to the regional quarters with playoff victories over Austin Crockett, 3-0 in bi-district, and 3-1 over Lake Belton in the area round.

The Cubs used their 25-20, 25-9, 25-12 over GHS to advance to the semifinals of the Region III-5A Tournament at the Merrill Center in Katy where they were scheduled to meet Manvel on Friday. Brenham took a 36-12 record into that contest with the 33-10 Mavericks, who bested Barbers Hill, 3-2, in their quarterfinal match. The other regional semifinal matched Lamar Fulshear (32-9) against Montgomery Lake Creek (30-17). The championship game was set for noon Saturday with the winner advancing to the UIL State Tournament.

Led by 6-foot 2 senior Brooke Bentke, who has committed to continue her career at Texas State University in San Marcos, the Cubs were able to pound the ball against GHS with a .318 average (38 kills in 85 hits with 11 errors) and a 44.7 kill efficiency. Bentke was the only scorer in double digits for either team with 14 kills in 28 attacks.

While Brenham, the 21-5A champion, was stinging the floor, the Lady Eagles finished the game with a minus-.084 hitting average (14 kills in 95 hits with 22 errors) and a 14.7 kill efficiency. Addi Gaido, a 6-foot-5 sophomore hitter, was the only Georgetown player with more than two kills as she put down eight of 31 attempts.

Things looked bright for GHS early in the match as it took a 10-5 lead, but the Cubs scored eight of the next nine points to take a 13-11 lead. However, the Lady Eagles scored back-to-back points to tie it at 13. The two teams played a nip-and-tuck game that Georgetown led 19-18 on a kill and block by Gaido. Bentke then asserted herself with four straight points to put her team up 22-19. A hitting error by Brenham closed the gap to 22-20, but the Cubs ran off the final three points to end the set with a kill by junior Chari Crowson supplying the set point.

Brenham got off to a fast start in the second set and constructed an 18-6 advantage. GHS could not cut the margin to less than 11 points as the Cubs scored six of the final seven points, including the final four in succession.

The third set followed a somewhat similar pattern to the previous set with the Cubs building a 21-8 lead and then played even-up 4-4 down the stretch to victory. Bentke provided the match point with her 14th kill.

Eight seniors -- Alexis Flora, Claire Mitchell, Karsyn Hamons, Kate Stengle, Brooklyn Trulove, Molly Edwards, Abby Brent and Ellie Quiroz -- played their final volleyball games as Lady Eagles.

Five sophomores -- Gaido, McKenzie Bernard, Issabella Casanova, Sadie Mccauley and Sophia Jazesf -- and two juniors -- Kamryn Shelton and Megan Hall -- will return next season. Hall missed all of the campaign while rehabbing a knee injury. Also on hand will be the products of a 26-1 junior varsity that went a perfect 14-0 in district and a strong Freshman White (A) team.
