After two seasons of watching the UIL state volleyball playoffs from the sidelines, coach Jenny Richardson's Georgetown Lady Eagles will return to the 128-team elimination at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Manor Senior High School. GHS, the District 23-5A runner-up, will face Austin Crockett, the third-seed from 24-5A, in their playoff opener.
Georgetown, 26-18 for the season and 12-2 in district, will face a group of Cougars, who finished their district race tied with Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy at 11-5 and then bested the Raptors, 3-2 (25-18, 17-25, 25-15, 15-25, 15-9), in a Friday night battle for the No. 3 seeding.
Looking at Tuesday contest with the Cougars, who stand, 18-26 for the season, Richardson said, "We need to serve tough and be consistent and play GTVB -- be loud, hit hard, serve tough, block well and dig the heck out of them!"
The winner of the GHS-Crocket battle will advance to the area match on the Region III-5A bracket against either Magnolia West or Lake Belton later this week. The Mustangs, fourth-place team in 21-5A, and the 22-5A champion Broncos will collide at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station. Lake Belton stands 34-8 on the season and Magnolia West is 24-13.
Crockett's offense hit an .068 average for the season with 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter Ayanna Pierre Louis producing 300 of the Cougars' 811 kills. She also leads Crockett with 47 blocks and also ranks among the team leaders with 62 aces and 406 digs.
The Lady Eagles will counter the Cougars with an attack hitting .192 (1,238 of 3,987, 474 errors). and a kill efficiency of 31.1. Addi Gaido, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter, paces the GHS offense with 410 kills in 928 attacks for a .335 average and also leads the Lady Eagles with 62 total blocks. Seniors Kate Stengle adds to Georgetown's game in several ways with 296 kills, 51 aces, 26 total blocks. 365 digs and 497 assists. Senior defensive specialist Alexis Flora has 603 digs and 6-foot sophomore middle McKenzie Bernard is developing a strong game at the net with 60 blocks.
After losing some momentum with two losses in their previous three district matches, the Lady regained their momentum in a 25-10 triplicate sweep of Bastrop last Tuesday before a supportive and loud crowd at Eagle Gym.
Also on Georgetown's side of the regional bracket, East View (11-3 in district and 25-11 for the season) will play Austin Ann Richards at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Pflugerville Connally. The East View-Ann Richards winner will play either Brenham or Killeen Chaparral in the area round. If both GHS and EV win their first two rounds they would meet in the regional quarterfinals early next week.
