Weiss Recap/District Opener

09-09-22

By GALEN WELLNICKI

Now that the Georgetown Lady Eagles have complete their non-district volleyball schedule, they will turn their attention to the 14-match District 23-5A derby and the possibilities of either besting Pflugerville Hendrickson for the crown in the eight-team alignment or at least breaking a two-season absence from the UIL state playoffs.

Coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles will begin those quests at 6:30 p.m. Friday when they entertain Pflugerville Connally in Eagle Gym on Sun City night. They will take a 14-16 mark into the district run, while Connally stands 9-17.

Hopefully, playing 19 of their first 30 matches against 6A opponents will pay a preparation dividend to GHS, which has played back-to-back 3-2 losses to Round Rock Stony Point and Pflugerville Weiss in its last two outings -- both on foreign hardwoods.

"Playing mostly 6A teams in our preseason has been tough," Richardson said after Tuesday's (23-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-12) loss to Weiss ,"but will prove to be beneficial in the long run.

"We have to cut our unforced errors down. The other side of the net has not been our issue. If we can continue to grow our offense and improve our blocking, we will see success in district."

Georgetown posted a 6-13 record against 6A non-district foes and were 8-3 against sub-6A opponents. Georgetown's 14-16 was the district's third best against non-district foes -- trailing only Hendrickson (21-10) and East View (14-9). The bottom five teams in 23-5A have a combined non-league mark of 35-87 (.287 percent).

In the deciding fifth set Friday against Weiss, a kill by 6-foot-5 sophomore Addy Gaido pulled GHS within one point at 12-11, However, the Wolve GHS s, now 10-16, scored three of the final four points with the set point coming on an ace by Ore Allimi.

GHS won the first two sets. A kill by Kate Stengle and a hitting error by the Wolves produces the two-point margin in the first set and scored the final five points to claim the second. Weiss rebounded to win the third set by outscoring the Lady Eagles, 6-1, at the end to take the third set and followed a similar victory path in the fourth to deadlock the match.

Statistically, GHS hit .198 for the match with 20 errors. Gaido with 23 and Stengle with 14 combined for GHS' 53 ki;;s and Gaido added four aces and Stengle made 26 assists with sophomore Issabella Casanova adding 23 assists. Senior Alexis Flora had 30 digs and Stengle added 22.

Complete Weiss statistics were unavailable. The Wolves' hard-hitting Caylee Mejia had 26 kills in 63 efforts.

The undefeated GHS JV (7-0) and Freshman White (A level) both posted 2-0 victories. There was no Freshman B contest.

Friday's schedule with Connally will include JV and Freshman A games at 5:30 p.m. and a Freshman B outing at 6:30 p.m.
