By GALEN WELLNICKI
After rolling through its first three District 23-5A volleyball matches without losing a set, including Friday's near-complete domination of Elgin, the Georgetown Lady Eagles face a four-day span in which they will face their two biggest challenges in the opening half of the seven-team alignment's championship derby.
Coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles, now 27-7 for the season, will entertain Pflugerville Hendrickson (1-1, 16-20) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eagle Gym and then travel to Pflugerville Weiss (3-0, 29-8) at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Lady Wolves, down from Class 6A, took a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-16) victory from the Lady Hawks on Friday. Weiss has the district bye and an open date on Tuesday.
In Hendrickson, Georgetown will be facing a team that graduated several key performers from last season's squad that tied the Lady Eagles 13-1 in the regular season chase before losing a playoff with GHS for the district's top state-playoff seeding.
During the second half of the 12-match 23-5A campaign, GHS will visit Hendrickson at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, and then play host to Weiss at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
In Friday's 3-0 win over Elgin's Lady Cats, the Lady Eagles outscored the opposition, 75-22 (25-7, 25-6, 25-9) as they denied Elgin a set in which they posted a double-digit point total. The loss to Georgetown dropped Elgin to 0-3 in 23-5A and 6-18 for the season.
Richardson was pleased with her team's performance in most areas.
"I enjoyed everybody playing, and all 11 of our kids played well," Richardson. "We accomplished most of our goals and we played with a lot of energy. We ran a play- every free ball and did that well."
One of the key areas for the Lady Eagles was their hitting as they finished the one-hour match with a .416 average as they made 38 kills in 77 hits with just six errors. Senior Jayden Mizner, who received the player of the match nod, led the balanced attack with eight kills in 11 hits. Senior outside hitter Addy Gaido, a 6-foot-5 UT commit, and senior middle Sofia Jazesf both added six kills and sophomores Mallory Miller and Amelia Albright each chipped in five. Seniors Addison O'Shaughnessy and Issabella Casanova fed the attack with 15 and 13 assists, respectively. Casanova also had five of GHS' 10 aces in 73 serves.
Defensively, Miller and senior libero Raegan Ramirez topped the digs chart with 13 and 12. Mizner figured in two of the Lady Eagles' three total blocks.
Georgetown asserted itself early as it jumped to a 15-2 lead in the opening set with 13 of those points coming on service series by senior Mckenzie Bernard and Casanova. With the score standing 20-6, the Lady Eagles' finished off the set by scoring five of the final six points, including three by Bernard. Set point came on an Elgin net serve.
In the second set GHS jumped to an 8-0 advantage on a service series by Casanova and built the lead to 13-2 and 15-3 before outscoring Elgin 10-3 down the stretch. Set point came on a kill by Albright.
Elgin showed slightly more offensive life early in the deciding set, trailing 12-6. However, GHS outscored the Lady Cats, 13-3, down the stretch with set and match point coming on an Elgin error. Twins Molly and A. O'Shaughnessy each had service runs of five points in the set.
On the sub-varsity level, the JV posted a 2-0 (25-8, 25-10 victory), while JV/Flex also won 2-0 (25-5. 25-15). There was no Freshman A match as Elgin does not field a third sub-varsity team.
Against Hendrickson on Tuesday, the JV will play at 5:30 p.m. in Eagle Gym and the JV/Flex and Freshman A matches will be at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, in the auxiliary gym.
On Saturday, the JV Flex and the Freshman A team competed in the Stony Point 9/JV Flex tournament. Coach Jason Allgood's Freshman A won its eight-team bracket, beating Manor and Pflugerville before besting the host school in the title game. Coach Ashlen Lacanne's JV/Flex squad placed second on its bracket, losing to Stony Point in the finals after downing Hutto and Cedar Ridge in the preliminary rounds.
