Prior to Tuesday's District 23-5A volleyball battle between 10th-ranked Georgetown and struggling East View, a person I know and respect their opinion said that the Lady Patriots, who were riding a lengthy losing streak, would start the best-of-three match spirited and hot and then lose their momentum.

This advance opinion proved true as coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles downed their cross-toll road rival, 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-9) at Eagle Gym, improving their district and season records to 2-0 and 26-7, respectively, and issuing East View its 10th-consecutive loss and an 0-2 record in 23-5A. The Patriots have won only six sets during that skid.

The Lady Eagles will take the road Friday to play Elgin (0-2 in 23-5A and 7-16 for the season) in a collision set for 6:30 p.m. The Lady Cats are coming off a 3-0 (25-13, 25-6, 25-5) loss to Pflugerville Weiss.

Speaking of Weiss (2-0, 28-8), the Lady Wolves will hold a majority of the district's attention Friday when they visit Pflugerville Hendrickson (1-0, 16-19). Hendrickson and Georgetown are the defending co-champions with the Lady Eagles having won a playoff for the district's top state playoff seeding last year. The Hendrickson Hawks swept Concordia, 3-0, on its first-round bye outing on Tuesday night. Weiss is in its first season down from Class 6A.

After playing Elgin, Georgetown will face both the Hawks and Wolves next week. They entertain Hendrickson on Tuesday and visit Weiss on Friday, Sept. 27. Weiss has its open date on Tuesday before facing GHS.

"I'm really pleased tonight," Richardson said about Tuesday's victory. "We accomplished all of our goals and we won all four of our matches tonight in straight sets (a 12-0 accomplishment.)"

One of the Lady Eagles' biggest areas of improvement was on offense as they hit a .349 average with just six errors. University of Texas commit Addy Gaido led an attack that punished the playing surface with 12 kills. She was supported by 6-foot-1 senior middle blocker Mckenzie Bernard with eight kills. Senior middle Sophia Jazesf and senior outside hitter Molly O'Shaughnessy followed with seven and six kills, respectively. Senior setter Allison O'Shaughnessy fed the attack with 17 assists and senior setter Issabella Casanova added nine. Bernard and senior libero Raegan Ramirez each had two of the team's four aces.

Other statistical leaders saw the 5-11 Jazesf figure in three of Georgetown's five total blocks and Ramirez make 18 of the Lady Eagles' 48 digs. M. O'Shaughnessy added 10 digs.

In the opening set, GHS took the lead for early at 5-4 on a kill by Gaido, but the issue remained extremely close and was deadlocked at 20-20 on an ace by the Patriots' Liliana Vogt. The Lady Eagles then outscored EV, 5-2, down the stretch with sophomore Amelia Albright scoring the set point.

The second set started out tight with Georgetown holding an 11-9 advantage before running off the final 14-consecutive points of which 13 came on a service series by M. O'Shaughnessy. A kill by Bernard started the run and a block at the net ended the set.

Georgetown took a 13-5 lead in third set on a kill by Jazesf and then ran eight straight points on a service series by Ramirez. The set and match point came on an East View hitting error.

Sub varsity action Friday at Elgin will be limited to two matches as the host school does not field a team to face Georgetown's Freshman A squad. The JV and JV Flex games are both set for 5:30 p.m.

All three GHS sub-varsity teams claimed straight set victories over East View. The JV improved to 10-3 on the season with a 25-8, 25-15 victory. the JV Flex posted a 25-15, 25-10 win and the Freshman A prevailed 25-6, 25-19. An opening kill by Makenna Stengle and a strong service series by Stengle got Georgetown off to a hot start in the JV match as they mounted a 13-3 lead and then finished the first set with a strong scoring surge.

LADY EAGLES NOTEBOOK: The Lady Eagles volleyball nominee for homecoming queen is 6-foot-5 senior outside hitter Addy Gaido. One of the ladies she will be competing against will be Lady Eagles basketball nominee Bella Dabbs, a 5-6 senior point guard. The homecoming football game is Friday, Oct. 4, against Killeen Chaparral. On that date the Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team will play a home game with Pflugerville at 5:30 p.m.

Over this past weekend, the Lady Eagles volleyball JV, JV Flex and Freshman A teams competed in the GISD sub varsity tournament. Coach Shelby Goode's JV posted a 3-0 record, beating Round Rock Stony Point, Manor and Gateway. The JV/Flex, which is coached by Ashlen Lacanne, won all four of their matches consisting of two sets to 15-points. The downed Manor, Hutto, Stony Point and Hendrickson. However, the matches did not count on their season records because they weren't of regulation length. Coach Jason Allgood's Freshman A were 1-2, losing to Lake Belton and Waco Midway and besting Westwood.

The JV Flex and Freshman A are scheduled to compete in the Stony Point Tournament this Saturday.
