Connally Recap- EV advance

09-16-24

By GALEN WELLNICKI

Virtually on the heels of Tuesday's disappointing 3-1 loss to Cedar Park, fourth-ranked Georgetown bounce back to dominate Pflugerville Connally, 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-13), in their District 23-5A opener on Friday night on the Lady Cougars' homecourt.

"I was very impressed with our game tonight," said Lady Eagles' coach Jenny Richardson. "We had a lot of players step up in areas that they normally do not do. Our offense was well spread out and executed nicely. we hit over 300 percent (.342 to be exact) tonight, so good stuff!"

A prime example of that was the performance of senior middle blockers Sofia Jazesf and Mckenzie Bernard, who led the GHS' attack with 11 of 14 and 7 of 14 kill showings, respectively. The Lady Eagles, now 25-7, found the floor on 36 of 73 attacks, while the Lady Cougars posted just 10 kills in 57 hits with 14 errors for .070 hitting percentage. Connally's individual kill leader only had four.

All three of the leading contenders in seven-team 23-5A posted 3-0 wins as Pflugerville Weiss, in its initial season down from 6A, defeated East View (25-14, 25-12, 25-17) and Pflugerville Hendrickson, last season's co-champion with GHS, fought off Elgin (25-22, 25-18, 25-22). In a non-district game, Pflugerville dropped a 3-1 decision to Belton.

Tuesday's action will see the Lady Eagles face arch-rival East View (8-17) at 6:30 p.m. at Eagle Gym. The Patriots will be trying to break a nine-match losing streak in which they have won only six sets. EV's last win was on August 24 when it defeated Austin McCallum.

Other 23-5A battles on Tuesday will send Weiss (27-8) to Elgin (6-16) and Connally (8-23) to Pflugerville (10-23). Hendrickson (15-19) has a bye from loop play and will entertain Concordia.

The first major collision of 23-5A derby is schedule for 5:30 p.m. Friday as Weiss visits Hendrickson. On the night, the Lady Eagles will venture to Elgin.

Other statistical leaders for Georgetown against the Lady Cougars were senior Molly O'Shaughnessy with four of the Lady Eagles' eight aces, senior libero Raegan Ramirez with 12 of the team's 32 digs and senior Allison O'Shaughnessy with 19 of 29 assists. Sophomore Amelia Albright figured in both of GHS' total blocks.

Georgetown mounted a 14-1 lead in the opening set with the O'Shaughnessy twins serving all 13 of the sets initial 14 points with the 6-1 Bernard putting down four kills during the span. Connally never got closer than 10 points. In the second set, the Lady Cougars took a 2-0 lead, but GHS went ahead to stay at 4-3 on a Connally hitting error.

The third set -- in which GHS took a 2-1 lead on a kill by Jazesf -- was much closer. At one point, the Lady Eagles led only 14-11, but scored the next nine points to go up 23-11 and eliminate any questions on the outcome of the set and match.

Georgetown swept all three sub-varsity matches, giving the Lady Eagles' program a 9-0 edge in set victories for the night. The JV claimed a 25-5, 25-5 victory in an exhibition of streaks by GHS. The Lady Eagles ran the first 13 points in the first set and outscored Connally, 12-1, at the close of the second set. Lady Eagles' server Makenna Stengle had a run of four consecutive aces in the second set.

 The GHS JV/Flex won 25-5, 25-7 ad the Freshman A took a 25-8, 25-12 decision.

On Tuesday's sub-varsity schedule against the Patriots the JV and JV/Flex will play at 5:30 p.m. and the Freshman A at 6:30 p.m. The JV match also will be in Eagle Gym with JV/Flex and Freshman A matches in the lower gym.

Tuesday's action also will celebrate middle school/elementary night.
