Westlake Recap

09-09-24

By GALEN WELLNICKI

Building momentum for the start of District 23-5A competition this coming Friday, the Georgetown Lady Eagles, ranked eighth in this past week's Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A poll, knocked off traditional 6A stalwart Austin Westlake on the Chaps' homecourt this past Friday.

Coach Jenny Richardson's crew, now 24-6 for the season, increased their win streak to three straight matches in a week in which they also knocked off once top-ranked Liberty Hill on Tuesday.

 Richardson was overjoyed with the 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 14-25, 25-17) victory over Westlake (18-13).

"What a night! Beating Westlake is never easy and it sure isn't easy to do in their gym," Richardson exclaimed. "I am so proud of how the girls played. All the things we watched on film and talked about -- they made massive adjustments. In practice this week we got to talk, watch, walk through things -- they accomplished the fine tuning of those aspects of the game. I am proud! Everybody had a monster game."

This Tuesday the Lady Eagles will face their final pre-district challenge when they play host to Cedar Park (14-15) at 6:30 p.m. on Madelyn Shoales Night. The Lady Timberwolves are coming off a 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 25-15) win over 6A Lake Travis.

The 12-match 23-5A campaign will open this coming Friday at Pflugerville Connally. The district race will run through Tuesday, Oct. 29. All varsity district matches are set for 6:30 p.m. starts. Pflugerville Weiss and Pflugerville Hendrickson are figured to be Georgetown's toughest competitors in the seven-team derby. (See complete GHS district schedule below).

Addy Gaido, a 6-foot-5 senior University of Texas commit, led the GHS attack against Westlake with 22 kills in 55 hits, while senior Molly O'Shaughnessy added 12 kills. The Lady Eagles had 49 kills in 169 attacks, but had 20 errors for a .154 hitting percentage. Senior Allison O'Shaughnessy and sophomore Amelia Albright fed the offense with 16 and 14 assists, respectively. Georgetown had eight aces with senior Raegan Ramirez, M. O'Shaughnessy and Gaido each having two.

On the defensive side, Ramirez, who has well over 1,000 digs for her career topped the statistical column with 27 and Albright added 19. The Lady Eagles were credited with eight total blocks with senior Sophia Jazesf figuring in five.

The sub-varsity schedule against Cedar Park will have JV and JV Flex games at 5:30 p.m. with the Freshman A playing Legacy Ranch at 6:30 p.m. The JV match will be in Eagle Gym, while Flex and Freshman contests will be in the lower gym.

In action this past weekend, the JV lost to Weiss in the finals of the Stony Point junior varsity tournament. At the Lake Belton event, the JV Flex finished as runners-up and the Freshman A lost in the consolation final.
