Rouse Recap Round 2

10-26-21

By GALEN WELLNICKI

After being eliminated from playoff contention by a 3-2 loss to 11th-ranked Leander Rouse on Friday night, the Georgetown Eagles will finish their season with a 6:30 p.m. Tuesday District 25-5A battle with Leander on Sun City Appreciation Night at Eagle Gym.

No matter the outcome of Tuesday's match with the fourth-place Lions (8-5, 18-29), the Lady Eagles (6-7, 23-21) will finish the campaign in fifth place in 25-5A with a better-than-.500 season record.

The 25-12, 25-14, 23-25, 16-25, 15-9 loss to first-place Rouse was an exciting affair as coach Jenny Richardson's Eagles overcame a slow start to win sets three and four to push the Raiders into the deciding race for 15 points on their home floor.

It was Georgetown's second 3-2 loss to a playoff-bound team in the second round of district play as they had previously fell by that score to Cedar Park, which entered the final night of 25-5A action deadlocked with Liberty Hill for second place. In the first round of District 25-5A play, both Cedar Park and Rouse swept GHS, 3-0.

"Too bad we’re not playing horseshoes," Richardson said of the loss to Rouse. "Why can’t we catch a break? Those young ladies, fought hard, clawed their way through every point.

"I hate that we couldn’t win one of our five-set matches. It’s tough when we’re right there with the top four teams in our district. We’re talking about two-to-five points from being in the top four. It’s hard.

   "I’m PROUD of our girls."

Leander won the first meeting with GHS on its homecourt, 3-1 (26-24, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17) on Friday, Oct. 1.

In Friday's battle neither team had a high hitting average -- GHS, .077; Rouse, .184 -- but the Raiders had a kill efficiency of 36.1 on 158 attempts as compared to the Eagles' 25.9 on 143 efforts. Rouse's three big attackers Karley Black, Kayla Lopez and Jadyn Wilgus had 16, 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Georgetown did not have a player in double digits. Junior Kate Stengel led GHS with nine.

In the opening set, Rouse jumped to a 10-point advantage at 16-6 and led by as many as 13 at 24-11 before Wilgus ended the set with a kill. The second set followed a similar course with the Rouse edge growing to 10 at 18-8 and then to 13 at 21-8 and 22-9. A kill by Black gave the Raiders the set and a 2-0 edge in the match.

However, in the third set, a point off a Rouse hitting error gave GHS a 3-2 lead and the Eagles held the margin until a successful flip over the net by sophomore Savannah Skopal tied the set at 23-23. Two hitting mistakes by the Raiders handed the set to Georgetown. Senior Lauren Cavanaugh and junior Claire Mitchell had four and three kills, respectively, for GHS.

A kill by Stengle tied the fourth set at 12-12 and a kill by Cavanaugh put the Eagles ahead to stay at 13-12 as GHS outscored Rouse, 16-6, to win the set by a nine-goal margin with a net serve by the Raiders providing the set point.

In the deciding fifth set, Rouse regained its gruve to claim the victory, taking the lead for good at 2-1 and building a seven-point margin at 12-5 an d 14-7. A kill by Black concluded the night's action.

Other stats leaders for GHS were junior Alexis Flora with two of the team's four aces, Cavanaugh figured in five of the Eagles' eight total blocks, senior Ellie Eissler made 21 digs and senior Annika Flora had 30 of Georgetown's 31 assists.

In sub-varsity action, Rouse claimed the JV match, 2-1, and the GHS White took the Freshman A contest, 2-0. There was no freshman B match.

Tuesday's season-ending sub-varsity schedule with Leander will have the JV and Freshman White playing in 5:30 p.m. contests. No Freshman Blue game is scheduled.
