As expected, Georgetown, East View and Pflugerville Hendrickson stand atop the District 23-5A volleyball standings after the first two rounds of the eight-team alignment's 14-match derby for state playoff qualification. And the three are expected to hold those positions through Friday's matches as the trio all face road tests. Coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles will be at Elgin, the Patriots at Bastrop and Hendrickson at Pflugerville.
However, there will be one major wrinkle for GHS as the times for the varsity and JV contests have been switched to accommodate Elgin's homecoming needs. The varsities will collide at 5:30 p.m. with the JV contest to follow.
On Tuesday night, Georgetown retained its position among the top three at 2-0 with a three-set sweep of Pflugerville (25-20, 25-9, 25-13) on the Lady Panthers' court. The victory also evened the Lady Eagles' season record at 16-16. A win over the Lady Wildcats (1-1 in 23-5A and 5-12 for the season) will set up this coming Tuesday's showdown against Hendrickson, currently 23-10 for the season, on Faculty Night at Eagle Gym.
Ask about the upcoming showdown with Hendrickson, Richardson said that her team had to be ready for every opponent and couldn't concentrate on Hendrickson, a team GHS scrimmaged prior to the start of the regular season. "We can't be focused on Hendrickson." The Hawks did show well in that 50-minute preseason meeting, which also was at Eagle Gym.
Georgetown senior libero Alexis Flora missed the Pflugerville match with an injury, bur Richardson hoping tp have her back for the Hendrickson battle. She was replaced this past Tuesday by senior Ellie Quiroz, who had 18 digs and three assists.
Looking at the win over Pflugerville, Richardson said, "I don't like playing in this gym. It always seems that momentum wins in this gym. The crowd can dictate how matches go. That's especially true when we have a roller-coaster game like we did tonight."
Against the Lady Panthers, the Lady Eagles hit a .226 average (34 of 93,13 errors), while the home team hit a lowly .012 average (17 of 83, 16 errors). GHS' 6 foot-5 sophomore Addi Gaido put down a match-high 11 kills in 28 attempts, while senior Kate Stengle contributed across the stats sheet with five ki;;s, 17 assists and nine digs. Senior middle blocker Victoria Guyton was selected Georgetown's player of the game.
In the opening set, GHS broke out to a 14-8 led, but PHS rallied to deadlock things at 14-14.The Landy Panthers were up 20-19. A kill by Lady Eagles'' sophomore Mckenzie Bernard evened things at 20-20 and Georgetown scored the final five points to end the see-saw affair.
The Lady Eagles jumped to a 12-2 lead in the second set. Pflugerville never got closer than nine points after that and GHS closed the set with a run seven unanswered points. Set point came on a PHS' hitting error.
Leading the third set 20-13, Georgetown closed out the match with a five-point run. The match point came on kill by senior Claire Mitchell, who was returning to action after an injury bout.
GHS also took the JV (25-9, 25-14) and both freshman matches in straight sets.
Friday at Elgin, the Freshman White (A) is scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m. No Freshman Blue (B) game is scheduled.
