Vista Ridge Recap - JV WINS

08-26-22

By GALEN WELLNICKI

A strong all-around performance by senior Ryleigh Garis (10 kills, three aces, 24 digs and 31 assists) along with several unforced errors by Georgetown helped lead the Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Lady Eagles in non-district action on the winner's court as the host school celebrated Senior Night.

"I'm not happy," GHS coach Jenny Richardson said after a 25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 25-19 loss dropped the Lady Eagles to 11-8 on the season and was their seventh setback in their last 10 matches. "I don't understand all the unforced errors. We've only had three full practices and the team is young, but I know they want to fire up, continue to improve and start winning."

The Lady Eagles will face another challenging test this Thursday, Friday and Saturday as they will complete their regular-season tournament schedule in the 68-team, 17-pool Leander ISD Volleypalooza. They will play in Pool 9 Thursday against Colleyville Heritage (15-3), San Antonio Reagan (11-10) and Katy Cinco Ranch (9-4). They will play Reagan at noon, Heritage at 1 p.m. and Cinco Ranch at 3 p.m. All three matches will be in the Leander Glenn Auxiliary Gym.

Friday and Saturday's schedules will be based on how teams progress at each stage of the event.

In the Vista Ridge contest, GHS made a total of 81 errors in the six charted statistical categories -- attacking, serving, total blocks, digs, assists and serve-receive. The Rangers, now 15-5 for the campaign, were charged with a total of 70 errors -- 29 of which came on attacks.

Statistically, 6-foot-5 sophomore Addy Gaido, made 21 kills in 39 attempts, while senior Kate Stengle made 16 of 35. Defensively, Alexis Flora and Stengle made 28 and 14 digs, respectively. Stengle also made also had 20 assists.

In the opening set, VR took the lead for good on an ace by Karsyn Kwan during a seven-point rally that put the Rangers up, 19-14. GHS could not close the gap to fewer than two points.

With the Lady Eagles on top and looking for set point at 24-23, Vista rallied with three consecutive points to lead the match, 2-0.

Georgetown tied the third set at 19-19 on an ace by Issabella Casanova as it scored the final nine points of the set.

In the deciding fourth set, the Lady Eagles never led and trailed by four to nine points most of the way.

On the JV level, coach Shelbi Goode's squad improved to 4-0 on the season with a 2-0 (25-21, 25-16) win over Vista Ridge. Both GHS freshman teams were swept 2-0 by the young Rangers.

While the varsity is at the Volleypalooza on Friday, the three sub-varsity teams will entertain Round Rock McNeil in a series of three matches, starting with the Freshman Blue match at 5 p.m. and followed by the Freshman White at 6 p.m. and the JV at 7 p.m. All four GHS teams will have open dates next Tuesday before completing non-district action with Round Rock Stony Point and Pflugerville Weiss, both on the road.

District 23-5A play will begin on Friday, Sept. 9, at home against Pflugerville Connally.
