 Winning 18 of 19 sets over three days, the Georgetown Lady Eagles powered their way to the gold bracket championship of LGE Tournament on the opening weekend of the volleyball season.

 In improving their season record to 10-0 -- all matches n their homecourt -- coach Jenny Richardson's swept three victories in pool play on Thursday and Friday and then best previously unbeaten La Vernia, 2-0 (25-13, 25-20) in Saturday's title match.

 "We played well today!," Richardson said. "We Beat Leander in two (in the first round of the eight-team bracket). Then beat Vandergrift 2-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-23) in the semifinals. Then finally beating La Vernia in two. Great play by everyone. It's been awhile since we've won a tournament, so very happy with the success the kids are having! Everyone played really well."

 The victories over Leander and Vandegrift marked the two team's second meetings with GHS. The Lady Eagles had opened the season this past Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over the Lady Lions and had scrimmaged the Lady Vipers on the previous Saturday.

 Georgetown earned its place on the gold bracket by posting 2-0 wins over Robinson, Jarrell and Little River-Academy on Thursday and the taking 2-0 victories over Giddings, Eagle Pass and Belton on Friday.

 In the razor-thin victory over Vandegrift, 6-foot-5 senior University of Texas commit Addy Gaido led the Lady Eagles with 23 kills in 50 hitting efforts with senior Allison O'Shaughnessy making 26 assists on GHS' 44 goals. In a hitting oddity GHS made just one ace on 73 serves that coming from Allison's twin Molly O'Shaughnessy.

 Defensively, senior Raegan Ramirez had 14 digs and sophomore Amelia Albright and A. O'Shaughnessy each added 11. Senior McKenzie Bernard and Albright both figured in four of Georgetown's six total blocks.

 In the championship battle with La Vernia, Molly O'Shaughnessy led the attack with 12 kills and an ace, while Gaido had nine kills and an ace. A. O'Shaughnessy and Albright fed the attack with 14 and 11 assists, respectively. On defense, Ramirez had 13 digs and Gaido added 10. Bernard figured in two of the team's three total blocks.

 Through the first 10 matches of the young campaign, GHS has won 21 of 22 sets.

 The Lady Eagles will return to action Tuesday when all four levels of the program are in combat with the Round Rock in the Dragons' gym. The varsity and freshman A will play at 6:30 p.m. withe JV and JV Flex slated for 5:30 starts. All three sub-varsity teams stand 1-0 for the year.

 On the upcoming Thursday through Saturday, the Lady Eagles varsity will compete in the prestigious New Braunfels Volleyfest.
