Crockett Recap- Montgomery Advance

11-03-23

By GALEN WELLNICKI

After a dominant 3-0 (25-7, 25-10., 25-10) over Austin Crockett Monday at the Delco Center in Austin, the Georgetown Lady Eagles will try to take another step up the UIL playoff ladder when they meet Montgomery in an area-round battle at 6 p.m. Friday at Hearne High School.

If coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles get past Montgomery, the third-place team from 21-5A, they will advance to a Region III-5A quarterfinal pairing with Brenham, which downed 24-5A champion Austin McCallum, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 13), in their area contests on Thursday night at Cedar Creek. That match would be played early next week.

The GHS-Montgomery match will be the opener of a doubleheader that will send Pflugerville Hendrickson against Montgomery Lake Creek, the 21-5A runner-up, at 8 p.m. Friday on the Hearne court. Co-champions at 13-1, the Lady Eagles and Lady Hawks are the only two 23-5A teams remaining in the playoffs as third-place East View was eliminated 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-15) by 21-5A winner College Station.

A quarterfinal matchup with Brenham would give the Lady Eagles a chance to avenge last season's 3-0 (25-20, 25-0, 25-19) third-round playoff loss to the Cubs.

Looking back to Monday's one-side win over Crockett, Richardson said, "Our win on Monday was a great win. We executed our serves where they needed to be, and our net play was on point. Proud of the girls and how they played."

Despite the absence of outstanding hitter Abby Gaido, a 6-foot-5 junior, the Lady Eagles overpowered the Cougars, outscoring them 75-27 in the three sets. GHS had 34 kills in 88 hits with nine errors for a 36.6 kill efficiency and a .284 hitting percentage. Junior Sadie Mccauley led the attack with 12 kills in 28 tries, while senior Kamryn Shelton made eight kills in 15 hits.

Other statistical leaders for GHS were juniors Raegan Ramirez and Issabella Casanova with three and four aces, respectively, junior Allison O'Shaughnessy with three total blocks, Ramirez with 21 digs and Casanova with 12 assists followed by A. O'Shaughnessy with 11.

As for Daido's absence, Richardson said, "We are resting Addy until there is a game that we really need her."

The victory over Crockett improved Georgetown’s season record to 33-15 and its current victory streak to five matches.

Looking ahead to the Friday's area match, Richardson indicated that she was looking for a match greater challenge from a Montgomery team that stands 30-17 for the year and also is riding a five-match victory, streak, including a 3-2 bi-district win over Killeen Ellison in which they had to come back from a 2-1 deficit.

"Friday vs Montgomery will be a much more exciting game," Richardson said. "They have a middle who I know our middles will enjoy playing against. They are a solid team."

The Lady Bears are led by 6-1 middle Grace Ellis, who has 112 total blocks to her credit this year and 5-10 freshman Delaney Wright with 489 kills. Other standouts include 5-7 junior Ellie Sadler with 647 digs, 5-9 Senior Kacey Lynch with 1,201 assists and 5-6 senior Abby Mullins with 56 aces.

At this point in the season, Georgetown's statistical leaders are Gaido with 427 kills, Ramirez with 72 aces, 6-1 junior Mckenzie Bernard with 103 total blocks, Ramirez with 834 digs and Casanova with 583 assists.
