Hendrickson Recap

10-30-23

By GALEN WELLNICKI

After sweeping co-champion Pflugerville Hendrickson, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 27-25) in a battle for District 23-5A's top playoff seeding on Friday on the Lady Hawks’ court, Georgetown's Lady Eagles (32-15 for the season) will play Austin Crockett (15-23) in bi-district at 6 p.m. Monday at the Delco Center in Austin.

Coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles and the Hendrickson Lady Hawks deadlocked for the 23-5A title with 13-1 records as they traded 3-1 regular-season victories on their home courts. Hendrickson (31-7) will play Austin Ann Richards (19-10) in the second match of the doubleheader at the Delco Center on Monday.

In Crockett, GHS will be facing a team that finished fourth in District 24-5A with a 10-6 record and is coming off a 3-0 victory in its regular-season finale over the Austin Northeast Early College Raiders.

The winner of the GHS-Crockett match will play either Killeen, the second-place team in 22-5A, or Montgomery, the third-place team in 21-5A, in the area round later in the week.

Junior middle blocker Sophia Jazesf, who scored the match point for the Lady Eagles, summed her feelings and her team's feelings up after the victory when she wrote in my notebook, "I knew I could trust my teammates and I knew they trusted me, too. That's why we won."

Following the playoff match, Richardson, who previously said that her team wasn't going to lose twice to the same opponent, said, "That was fun. Our four seniors (Megan Hall, Kenna Heine, Kamryn Shelton and Reagan Truitt) were models of the trust between the team members in our program that we wanted. I was very proud of what we accomplished tonight."

Offensively, Georgetown had 40 kills in 130 hits with 10 errors for a 30.8 kill efficiency and a .231 hitting percentage. Addy Gaido, a 6-foot-5 junior outside hitter, led the attack with 10 kills, while juniors Sadie Mccauley and Jazesf added eight points each and junior Molly O'Shaughnessy had six.

Other statistical leaders for the Lady Eagles, who have won 16 of their last 17 starts, were junior Raegan Ramirez with two aces and 25 digs, Jazesf and junior Mckenzie Bernard had four and three total blocks, respectively, and juniors Allison O'Shaughnessy and Issabella Casanova added 14 and 12 assists.

The usually hard-hitting Lady Hawks made 31 kills in 98 hits with 15 errors for a 31.6 kill efficiency and a .153 hitting percentage. Senior Kara Wynn led the Lady Hawks with 11 kills in 32 attempts, while fellow senior Kamea Uitenham added 10 kills.

In the opening set, Hendrickson led much of the early time by slim margins, but with score tied at 12-12, Gaido put that Lady Eagles ahead to stay with a kill. Georgetown outscored the Lady Hawks, 16-8, down the stretch with set point coming on a Hendrickson hitting error into the net.

Again GHS got hot down the stretch in the second set, outscoring Hendrickson, 9-5, to the finish with a kill by Jazesf ending the set.

In the dramatic third set, the Lady Hawks scored five points to claim a 25-24 edge, but a kill by Gaido knotted the score at 25-25 and then an inability to successfully return a Lady Eagles' hit and kill by Jazesf provided the needed two-point margin to decided the issue.

In Monday's bi-district battle the offense of 5-8 sophomore outside Lola Osaighovo and senior middle Liv Gronquist and the all-around play of 5-4 senior libero/defensive specialist Mia Vidal will lead coach Lorie Henry's Crockett Cougars.

In the other two bi-district matches between 23-5A and 24-5A, Cedar Creek will play host to 24-5A champion Austin McCallum at 7 p.m. Monday and East View and 24-5A runner-up Austin LASA will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Pflugerville Connally.

I guess nobody wanted to play on Halloween.
