Liberty Hill Recap Round 2

10-22-21

By GALEN WELLNICKI

"It has been a splendid little war, begun with the highest motives, carried on with magnificent intelligence and spirit . . ." So said John Hay, the United States' secretary of State in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.

If he were alive and kicking today and in attendance at Tuesday's District 25-5A volleyball match between Georgetown and Liberty Hill at Eagle Gym, he might have expressed a similar feeling after the Panthers' 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-12, 29-27) victory that placed the Eagles in a deep hole in the run for a state playoff berth.

In a way, Georgetown coach Jenny Richardson shared Hays' basic feelings. "I'm not happy that we lost or our position in the district standings (one game out of fourth place with two matches still to play), but I was so proud of our girls' fight and effort along with the environment.

"I feel that this was an important happening for Georgetown High School. Our crowd tonight brought together our community -- parents, fans, program alumni, students from all our activites (drama, music, other sports, cheer). It was something normal and of big benefit because of the problems caused by the pandemic."

With two matches remaining, the Eagles' task would be called "improbable" by many, but is not impossible. GHS (6-6 in 25-5A) must win its final two outings, including the regular-season finale with Leander (7-5 in 25-5A) at Eagle Gym. The Lions also own the victory in the first head-to-head district meeting between the two schools.

The rub for Georgetown is the difference in opponents on Friday between the Eagles and Lions. GHS, now 23-20 on the season, face first-place and state ranked Rouse (11-1 in 25-5A and 30-12 on the season. The Raiders beat GHS in the first meeting, 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-14).

While GHS is playing the best team in the district on Friday, Leander (16-28 on the year) is facing seventh-place Leander Glenn on Friday Night at home. A win by Leander (2-10) or a loss by Georgetown on Friday would eliminate the Eagles from playoff contention.

Tuesday's Liberty Hill-Georgetown contest came down to be a hard-hitting duel between Panthers' seniors Allie Hair (20 kills) and Maddi Rowley (19 kills) along with sophomore Gigi Mason and the Eagles' juniors Kate Stengle (15 kills) and Claire Mitchell (12 kills) and 6-foot-4 sophomore Addy Gaido (11 kills).

In the deciding fourth set, the Eagles trailed by as many as six points before kills by Gaido and Mitchell along with an LH hitting error pulled GHS even at 21-21. From that point the score was deadlocked at 22, 23, 24, 26 and 27. A kill by Gaido produced Georgetown's 27th point, but the Panthers put the set and match away with a kill by Hair and a block by Hair and senior Bailey Becker.

After leading most of the first set, Georgetown was finally pulled into a tie at 19-19 by a kill by Mason. The score also was deadlocked at 20 and 21 before GHS pulled out to a 24-21 lead. The Panthers rallied to tie things again at 24-24. Back-to-back kills by Mitchell and senior Lauren Cavanaugh gave the Eagles the 1-0 advantage in the match.

Liberty Hill deadlocked the march at a set apiece as it scored five of the last seven points to expand a 20-19 lead into a 25-21 win in the second set with Rowley clinching the set with a kill.

The Panthers went up 2 sets to 1 as they literally ran away from GHS, taking a 13-point lead at 21-8 that was expanded to 14 points at 23-9 and 24-10. Set point came on a service error.

In addition to hitting .151 with a 34.2 kill efficiency. the Eagles managed only three aces in 87 serves with no individual having more than one. Senior Annika Flora had 40 of Georgetown's 44 assists.

Defensively, Junior Alexis Flora had 26 of the Eagles' 85 digs. GHS was not credited with a block.

In sub-varsity action, the Liberty Hill JV took a 2-0 win (27-25, 25-21) and the Panthers also won the Freshman A game, 2-0 (25-19, 25-19).

At Rouse on Friday, the JV and Freshman White (A) games are set for 5:30 p.m. with the Freshman Blue (B) contest at 6:30 p.m.
