Marble Falls Recap Round 2

10-19-21

By GALEN WELLNICKI

The Georgetown Eagles took a major step in pulling themselves back into the race for a state playoff berth by ending their four-game losing streak with a 25-10, 25-8, 25-10 sweep of last-place Marble Falls in the Mustangs' corral on Friday night.

The victory improved the Eagles' District 25-5A reading to 4-5, but didn't allow them to gain ground on fourth-place Leander, which bested then co-leader Liberty Hill, 3-2, and retained a two-game edge over GHS with a 6-3 record with five games remaining in the regular season.

The Eagles, now 21-19 on the season, will be trying to close the gap between fourth and fifth place to one-game when they play host to Leander Glenn (2-7) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Eagle Gym. Leander (6-3) will be facing front-running Leander Rouse (8-1), which tumbled from third to 12th in the Texas Girls Coaches Association 5A rankings after losing to Liberty Hill last week.

Georgetown defeated Glenn, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) in the first meeting on Friday, Sept. 17, on the Grizzlies' court.

As for the Marble Falls match, GHS head coach Jenny Richardson said, "We had some ups and downs in our match versus Marble Falls. We were out of system too many times. Luckily, we played well and our offense put some balls down. Our middles did a great job, and Annike (Flora) mixed the offense up well."

In outscoring the Mustangs by a 75-28 count in three sets, the Eagles posted a hitting percentage of 41.5 (29 of 65 with two errors) with a kill efficiency of 44.6. Senior middle Lauren Cavanaugh led the kill parade with nine, while junior Kate Stengle and senior Riley Gollnick added six and five respectively. Senior Annika Flora fed the offense with 24 assists and sophomore Ary Hawes had four of Georgetown's five saves.

Defensively, juniors Ellie Quiroz and Brooklyn Trulove led with 12 and 10 digs and Cavenaugh and 6-foot-4 sophomore Addy Gaido each figured in two of the Eagles' four blocks.

After playing Glenn on Parent Night Tuesday Georgetown will travel to East View at 6:30 p.m. Friday for the second meeting of the two neighborhood rivals. GHS downed the Patriots, 2-7 in district, by a 3-0 count in a highly competitive match on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Eagle gym.

In sub-varsity action at Marble Falls last Friday, the GHS JV and Freshman White (A level) both swept the young Mustangs. The JV prevailed, 25-7, 25-9 and coach Lacey Blissit's White improved to 8-1 in 25-5A with a 25-9, 25-13 victory.

Sub-varsity encounters Tuesday with Glenn have the JV and Freshman White playing at 5:30 p.m. and the Freshman Blue taking the court at 6:3 p.m. Freshman games are played in the lower gym.
