Lake Belton Recap - Brenham Preview

11-07-22

By GALEN WELLNICKI

Potentially, Georgetown's Lady Eagles will face their toughest test in the UIL volleyball playoffss when they face the Brenham Cubs, the District 21-5A champions, in the Region III-5A quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Hearne High School Gym.

Coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles (28-18) are coming off a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18) homecourt victory over Lake Belton in the area round on Friday, while Brenham (35-12) eliminated East View, 3-0 (25-18, 25-8, 25-14) on Thursday.

The Georgetown-Brenham survivor will advance to the Region III-5A Tournament on Friday and Saturday where they will play Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill or Manvel in the semifinals. Barbers Hill and Manvel are set to play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Pasadena's Dobie High School. Other regional quarters will match Lamar Fulshear against Nederland and Montgomery Lake Creek against College Station.

Richardson has plenty of respect for the Cubs' attack, which in 138 sets, have recorded 1,645 kills in 4,490 attacks with 648 errors for a .222 hitting percentage with a 31.6 kill efficiency.

"No, 22 (6-2 senior Brooke Bentke) on Brenham is a big power hitter. We need to shut her down. Their offense is a good mix of hitters. We will have to serve tough and block well to beat Brenham. And as Yogi (Berra) would say, we just need to make less errors than them."

Bentke has .305 hitting average with 496 kills in 1,146 attacks.

Georgetown will counter with an offense that has recorded 1,241 kills in 4,107 attacks for a .191 hitting percentage. The offense is paced by 6-foot-5 sophomore outside hitter Addi Gaido, who has a .335 hitting average on 419 kills on 945 hits. Senior Kate Stengle adds 317 kills on 873 attacks.

Looking back on Friday's win over Lake Belton, Richardson said, "I didn't think it would go to four sets, but we stuck to it and came away with the win. Our sophomores stepped it up at the net. We did a good job serving. We were not outplayed. Everybody did a good job."

One of the turning points in the match was when GHS brought Gaido, who missed Tuesday's bi-district win over Austin Crockett with an illness, into the fray and she started hammering the Broncos' defense with laser shots to the playing surface.

"My teammates did a good job of playing during the match and allowing we to save my energy," Gaido said. "It was good to get back on the court."

Logging considerable time in the third and fourth sets, Gaido finished with nine kills in 17 attacks as Georgetown completed the match with a .166 hitting percentage (47-157, 21 errors). Stengle led the offense for the match with 12 kills in 36 attacks and senior Claire Mitchell added eight kills.

In the opening set, GHS took the lead for good at 5-4 and constructed an eight-point advantage at eight times in the set. Lake Belton rallied to make it 24-21 by scoring three of the final four points. Set point came on a Lake Belton hitting error.

The Broncos took the lead for good in the second set as hitting violation by the Lady Eagles gave them a 10-9 edge, which was increased to seven points at 19-12. Georgetown never cut that lead to fewer than three point.

In the third set, Lake Belton cut the GHS lead to 18-17 and 19-18 before the Lady Eagles took a 2-1 edge in the match as they scored six of the final eight points with set point coming on a kill by Gaido, who scored four points in the closing rally.

Georgetown broke out of an 8-8 tie to take the lead for good on a kill by Stengle in the fourth set and then secured the match and regional quarterfinal berth by scoring 10 of the final 15 points. The match point came on a Lake Belton hitting error.

Other statistical leaders for GHS were three aces by Stengle, four total blocks by sophomores McKenzie Bernard and Sophia Jazesf, Senior Alexis Flora and Stengle had 31 and 25 digs, respectively, and sophomore Issabella Casanova had 23 assists.

With Brenham's win over East View and Pflugerville Hendrickson's 3-1 loss to College Station, Georgetown remained the only District 23-5A team in the regional tournament.
