Crockett Recap

11-04-22

By GALEN WELLNICKI

Georgetown's Lady Eagles will try to take another step up the UIL state volleyball playoff ladder at 6 p.m. Friday in Eagle Gym when they play host to District 22-5A champion Lake Belton in Region III-5A area action.

Coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles, who finished second in 23-5A and own a 27-18 season record, are coming off a 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-17) bi-district win over Austin Crockett, the No. 3 seed from 24-5A, on Tuesday night in Manor.

The Lake Belton Broncos, who won their district with a 13-1 record and stand 35-8 for the year, fought off Magnolia West, 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 15-25, 15-10) in bi-district action on Tuesday at College Station A&M Consolidated. It was the Broncos' second consecutive five-set win as they had bested Killeen Ellison, 3-2, in their final district match.

The winner of Friday's battle will tackle either East View, the third-place team from 23-5A, or Brenham, the District 21-5A champion. East View and Brenham were scheduled to collide at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Giddings. The Patriots advanced through bi-district with a 3-1 win over Austin Ann Richards and Brenham blanked Killeen Chaparral, 3-0.

Looking back at Tuesday's sweep of Crockett's Cougars, Richardson said, "It was a great moment for these kids. I am excited that their hard work paid off. They are strong individuals who thrive when they come together. Great team win!!!"

Georgetown was forced to play without scoring leader Addi Gadio, a 6-foot 5 sophomore outside hitter, who was sidelined by an illness.

"It was ackward for us not having her out there," Richardson said of a player with 410 kills and a .335 hitting persentage in 117 sets. Richardson said Thursday that she was unsure of Gaido's status for Friday's match. "Hoping she will at least be at 75 percent."

Versatile senior setter/outside hitter Kate Stengle was named the player of the match with a team-high 10 kills, one ace. one block, 12 assists and 21 digs. As a team, the Lady Eagles posted 33 kills in 120 attacks with 14 errora for a .158 hitting percentage with a kill efficiency of 27.5.

In the opening set, Georgetown jumped to a 9-1 lead and never let the margin fall under for points as it outscored the Cougars 11-5 down the stretch with set point coming on a Crockett serve into the net.

Leading 19-11 in the second set, GHS posted six of the final seven points with set point coming on a hitting error with the ball again finding the net.

The Lady Eagles led 11-7 early in the third set and then took control by scoring seven of the next eight points. The Cougars sliced the margin to six at 22-16, but could pull no closer. Senior outside hitter Clare Mitchell's fifth kill of the match provided both the set and match points.

Other GHS statistical leaders were senior Ellie Quiroz with two aces and sophomore middle McKenzie Bernard with two total blocks. Junior Kamryn Shelton and sophomore Sadie McCauley also had five kill each for the Lady Eagles.

In its victory over Magnolia West, momentum and reestablishing the momentum after losing the third and fourth sets was the key in Lake Belton's bi-district win.

“We talked a lot about momentum. Volleyball is a game of momentum and it’s constantly shifting, and once you lose it, it’s hard to regain it,” Broncos coach Liz Ramsey told The Temple Daily Telegram.“We let them dictate what was happening. I was worried going into five because we had not played well (in the fourth)."

The Broncos never led in the third and fourth sets.

With the score in the fifth set tied at 6-6, Lake Belton ran off six straight points to go up 12-6 and then finished off the set and match.

Gabby Jones, a 5-foot-7 sophomore outside hitter led the Broncos with 14 kills and Trinaty Pearson, a 5-7 junior middle blocker. added 10 kills.

Richardson had pointed to Jones and 5-6 senior outside hitter Danica Bingham as players the GHS defense needs to control for the Lady Eagles to be successful.
