Bastrop Recap Round 2

10-27-22

By GALEN WELLNICKI

After clinching an outright claim on second place in District 23-5A on Tuesday night with a 25-10 triplicate victory over seventh-place Bastrop at Eagle Gym, the Georgetown Lady Eagles will return to the UIL state playoffs for the first time since they ran the District 18-5A table in 2019.

Coach Jenny Richardson's Lady Eagles, 12-2 in 23-5A and 26-18 for the season, will play either Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy or Austin Crockett in bi-district at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Novemember 1st at the Manor Senior High School Gym. The LASA Raptors and the Crockett Cougars tied for third in 24-5A with 11-5 records.

Georgetown will play the winner of Friday's 6 p.m. playoff contest between LASA and Crockett, which is slated for the Burger Center in Austin. The loser of that battle will begin the playoffs against 23-5A champion Pflugerville Hendrickson (13-1, 35-11), which clinched first place this past Tuesday with a sweep of last-place Elgin.

The final day of the regular-season also was profitable for two other teams in the GHS volleyball program. Coach Shelbi Goode's JV won the 23-5A title on its level as it posted a 14-0 district mark and a 26-1 season reading. The Freshman White (A), which is coached by Lacey Blissit, tied Hendrickson for the freshman crown with a 13-1 district mark. They were 22-8 for the whole campaign.

"That was fun," Richardson said after the varsity victory over Bastrop. "It was a team victory. Everybody did their part and played well. We accomplished the goals we set for this match. (Senior) Abby Brent played lights out."

Brent was selected as Georgetown's player of the contest.

One of the major difference in Tuesday's battle was the quality of the offensive play. Georgetown hit a .373 average (34-75 with only five errors) with a kill efficiency of 42.6, while the Bears (3-11, 12-33) managed only a minus-.115 average (15-87 with 25 errors) with a 17.2 kill efficiency. Sophomore Addi Gaido used the power of her 6-foot-5 frame, to lead all hitters with 11 kills in 18 attacks. She was the only player on either team to record more than five kills. Brent added five for GHS and Hannah Provence led Bastrop with five. The Lady Eagles also added seven aces with seniors Alexis Flora and Kate Stengle each posting two. Stengle also feed the Lady Eagles' attack with 18 assists.

Other statistical leaders for GHS were senior Alexis Flora with nine digs and Gaido figuring in on three blocks.

Lead the opening set at 23-10, the Lady Eagles took the victory on a net serve by the Bears and a "hammer" kill by Gaido. GHS had taken the lead for good at 3-2.

Georgetown jumped to an 11-1 lead in route to a victory in the second set and in the third it steadily built a 20-9 advantage and then scored five of the final 16 point to close out the match. Match point came on a block by Gaido.

The JV closed its perfect run through 23-5A with a 25-1 and 25-9 victory. The Lady Eagles had taken a 17-0 lead in the opening set before Bastrop scored its lone point. GHS also never trailed in the second set.

"I'm really proud of the girls," Goode said of the JV's season. "It was awesome."

The Freshman White swept Bastrop, 25-12, 25-8, to claim its share of the district freshman crown. The GHS Freshman Blue (B) dropped s 2-1 decision to Lake Belton in a non conference match.

Looking ahead to the LASA-Crockett showdown, the Raptors, who had the final-round bye in 24-5A, dropped a 3-0 non-district decision to Austin St. Andrews on Tuesday and the Cougars swept Austin Northeast Early College. The two teams split their series during the district season.
