By GALEN WELLNICKI
On Tuesday night, Georgetown and Pflugerville Hendrickson assured themselves of a co-championship in District 23-5A with a pair of one-sided 3-0 victories that gave them both 13-1 marks. The Lady Eagles bested Bastrop (25-12, 25-7, 25-10) on the road and the Lady Hawks dominated last-place Elgin (25-8, 25-6, 25-10).
At 6 p.m. Friday on the Hendrickson playing surface, the two rivals will collide to determine their bi-district seeding for the UIL's 128-team, seven-round Class 5A state playoffs. The winner will face Austin Crockett, the fourth-place team in 24-5A, while the loser will draw third-place Austin Ann Richards. Bi-district competition will begin Monday with GHS head coach Jenny Richardson expecting the Lady Eagles, 31-15 for the season, to be in action on opening night after talking to an Austin ISD official.
During the district race, Georgetown and Hendrickson split 3-1 homecourt decisions. The Lady Eagles won at Eagle Gym (25-19, 25-15, 15-25, 25-22) on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and the Lady Hawks defended their territory (25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 26-19) on Friday. Oct. 13. Hendrickson, now 31-6 for the year, is riding a 10-match victory streak, while GHS has won three straight since falling to the Lady Hawks.
In this week’s Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings Hendrickson was No. 12 and Georgetown No. 15.
"It's going to be intense like the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros," Richardson answered when asked about Friday's showdown. "I don't lose twice."
If you remember the Rangers-Astros series, the visitors won every game. Is it an omen for the Lady Eagles?
For the record, Ann Richards finished third in 24-5A with a 13-3 record and Crockett was fourth at 10-6. Austin McCallum won the title at 15-1, while Austin LASA was second at 14-2. McCallum will open the playoffs against 23-5A's fourth-place Bastrop Cedar Creek (7-7) and LASA will tackle third-place East View (10-4).
As for the victory over Bastrop, which finished fifth in the 23-5A race, Richardson was pleased with both the Lady Eagles' overall performance and the individual showings of all the players who stepped on the court -- terming both areas as "legit for Class 5A."
She was particularly pleased with one area of the performance. "We finally did really well in the middle," she said. "I was fired up about what we did."
GHS had a strong night attacking with 27 kills in 65 attempts with only four errors. The Lady Eagles had a 41.5 kill efficiency and a .354 hitting percentage. Junior Sadie Mccauley led the balanced attack with five kills and juniors Molly O'Shaughnessy and Addy Gaido added four each. Serving was also strong with 12 aces in 75 serves. Seniors Megan Hall was the leading ace in deck with four and Kenna Heine added three.
Other statistical leaders for the Lady Eagles were junior middle Mckenzie Bernard with three total blocks, junior Raegan Ramirez with 12 of the team's 38 digs and juniors Issabella Casanova and Allison O'Shaughnessy fed the attack with 10 and six assists, respectively.
In the opening set, GHS jumped to a 6-0 lead and then virtually put the set our of reach with eight consecutive points, including a seven-point service series by Heine. The run put the Lady Eagles up 14-4 and they never let the margin slip to less than seven points. Set point came on a Bastrop violation.
Georgetown built a 15-7 lead in the second set and then scored the final 10 points with Hall's serving being a key factor. Set point came on a block by Bernard.
After the Lady Bears reduced Georgetown's lead to 10-6, the Lady Eagles took control, outscoring Bastrop, 15-4, to the finish line. Match point came on a kill by junior Jayden Mizner.
On the sub-varsity level at Bastrop, coach Shelbi Goode's JV completed a 14-0 run through 23-5A with a 25-16, 25-17 win that saw the set points come on a kill by Mallory Miller and an ace by Amelia Willman. Coach Lacey Blissit's Flex team also finished in a deadlock with Hendrickson at 13-1 with a 25-11, 25-12 victory. Coach Jason Allgood's Freshman A previously had won the 23-5A title with an 8-0 mark as Bastrop did not field a team at that level.
